PSIGE in High Spirits at Chester

During July 2005, our Chester campus again played host to experts from across the World who came to attend the 25th Annual PSIGE conference themed ‘celebrating age’.

Established in 1980, PSIGE is a faculty of the Division of Clinical Psychology (DCP) within the British Psychological Society (BPS). It works to encourage the exchange of information, ideas and expertise about psychological approaches with older people.

It is a national group with members throughout the UK and, although primarily for Psychologists, membership is open to individuals from other disciplines and voluntary groups who share an interest in work with older people.

On this occasion, Dr Mervyn Eastman (UK Director, Better Government for Older People) delivered a particularly well received Keynote address and, in tandem with a comprehensive academic programme, delegates were also given the opportunity to enjoy social activities on and around the campus.

This year, in addition to a champagne reception, conference dinner and 80s disco, delegates were also invited on a ‘ghost tour’ of Chester. Of course, the opportunity to sample some of Chester’s best bars was also on offer during the course of this high spirited expedition! Rachel Glyn-Williams, Chair of the Conference was happy to discuss the event.

‘This year we have had positive feedback from our delegates’ she said. ‘The staff have been flexible and accommodating and Chester itself is such a great venue. It’s particularly nice to have a compact, accessible and level site so close to the city centre’.
